Types Of Light Therapy

Question:

What reasons can be given for not using my desk lamp as a light source? From what I understand, it is the light intensity and not the spectrum range that is most important for this type of therapy. Incandescent bulbs do not emit UV (or at least much of it as compared to fluorescent bulbs).

So my question is, why would I choose a light box over my regular lamp? Please back up any arguments with results from legitmate scientific studies. I greatly appreciate any advice, but I'm not really looking for sales pitches from light box companies :)

Answer:

There are two possible problems that I know of, depending on the light.

First is heat... if the Reveal light is a fluorescent, that probably won't be a problem, but if it were, say, a halogen, it'd probably be a problem.

Second would be UV. You might need to get UV safety glasses to use it safely, or you might need to take other precuations. This is something that's extraordinarily important to understand. You *CAN NOT* feel UV damage occurring to your eyes. UV safety glasses are clear; I'm not talking about sunglasses (which would reduce the intensity, and may, or may not, block UV).

Keep in mind: I'm not a doctor, nor am I an expert in lighting. There could, conceivably, be other problems.
