Light Therapy

Question:

I was just curious, and maybe someone who uses light box therapy, or has researched it, can tell me... How do tanning beds stack up as a source for light therapy?

Answer:

The main thing with a SAD light is to get lots of light shining into your eyes. That's the last thing you want with a UV source like a tanning bed, hence the goggles. Being brown all over may make you feel better about yourself, but it's not light therapy as we know it.

  • Light therapy or phototherapy consists of exposure to specific wavelengths of light using lasers, LEDs, fluorescent lamps, dichroic lamps or very bright, full-spectrum light, for a prescribed amount of time. It has proven effective in treating seasonal affective disorder, and for some people it has ameliorated delayed sleep phase syndrome. It has recently been shown effective in non-seasonal depression. Proponents claim demonstrable benefits for skin conditions such as psoriasis and, more controversially, a degree of 'skin rejuvenation.'
  • or treating SAD, according to experts, white light therapy is often preferred over the full-spectrum light because the additional UV light found in full-spectrum light is not necessary to achieve the antidepressant effect of the therapy, and can be harmful to the eyes.
